When one hears the word “Freedom”, one associates it with another word – “Free”. But that is a term used at a particular moment. Events that led to that moment, have not always been free.
This picture is taken outside the walls of the Elmina Castle in Elmina, Ghana. One of the first castles on the West African coast, it was built by the Portuguese and later taken over by the Dutch, who in turn sold it to the British. Much has been written about the castle and that period, but what fascinated me was the fact that these kids were and probably still are, “free” to play football outside the same walls where their forefathers were not. Across that same field, their forefathers were forced into ships that would take them to a far away place to work as slaves. Their forefathers paid the price for these kids to be “free”.
Being free comes with a price. They probably know the history of the fields they are playing on, but at that moment all that is in their mind is the pleasure of the game and the spirits of their forefathers watching over them and happy that they are able to do so.
Be free, wherever you are…. Freedom
