Typically associated with the dutch, clogs have been used in many other countries, like Belgium, England and some other Northern European countries. Clogs were mostly worn by the working class, on farms and factories. Contrary to how they look like, they are pretty comfortable to wear. In the winter with woolen socks, they are said to be very warm since the wood prevents the cold from coming through the sole area.
It used to take months to make a pair, but with machines, it would take about ten minutes to replicate one and then about 4 weeks to dry it. Mainly handmade, in the images you’ll see a few types, from a men’s style, through wedding clogs to Roller-clogs and high heels ones. Clogs are still worn today, but mostly on farms, or during traditional fairs or shows, but the characteristic sound of wood on pavement is not heard anymore in the shopping streets….;).
Happy viewing, wherever you are….
